What to Expect at a Class

Meditation Classes

The drop in meditation classes at the centre and its branches are open to everyone and include step-by-step guided meditations, talks and informal discussions. These group classes will allow you to relax, enjoy some meditation, and return home feeling refreshed and inspired. You do not need to book in advance, just drop in. We run both evening and lunch time meditation classes at the centre and its branches during term times.

What to Expect at a Class

"The purpose of meditation is to make the mind calm and peaceful. When the turbulence of distracting thoughts subsides and the mind becomes still, a deep happiness and contentment arises naturally from within."

The New Meditation Handbook by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

About the classes

The meditation classes, suitable for everyone explain Buddhist meditation, ideas, and practice. They combine guided meditation with practical advice that you can apply immediately to relieve stress and solve problems in your life.

Everyone is welcome. The classes are suitable for both beginners and experienced meditators. You do not need to be a Buddhist to attend the classes, or to benefit from the techniques taught.

The classes are organized as short courses, usually 4 to 6 weeks long. It is best to attend complete courses, but you can attend occasionally if you prefer. The classes are easy to follow and do not need prior knowledge or experience.

About meditation

In his book, The New Meditation Handbook, Geshe Kelsang explains:

"Meditation is a mind that concentrates on a virtuous object, and which is the main cause of mental peace. The practice of meditation is a method for acquainting our mind with virtue. The more familiar our mind with virtue, the calmer and more peaceful it becomes. When our mind is peaceful, we are free from worries and mental discomfort, and we experience true happiness."
